What is Jilcha Seunggang?

Jilcha Seunggang can be understood as a form of Daoyin.

Rather than focusing only on muscular strength, Daoyin aims to release unnecessary tension, open the joints, improve circulation, and reconnect different parts of the body.

Jilcha Seunggang focuses especially on the hips, pelvis, legs, and spine. Through gentle rising, sinking, and shifting movements, it helps develop better alignment, smoother weight transfer, and a more stable connection with the ground.

The purpose is not to make large or forceful movements, but to move slowly and attentively, allowing the whole body to work as one connected system.

Step 1: Starting Position

  1. Stand with your feet more than twice shoulder-width apart.
  2. Turn your toes outward at approximately 45–60 degrees.
  3. Bend your knees comfortably.
  4. Extend your arms out to both sides, keeping them gently rounded as if holding a large ball.
  5. Relax your elbows and shoulders.
  6. Keep your spine and upper body upright.
  7. Do not push your hips backward.

Step 2: Sink to the Left

  1. Begin the movement with the right hand.
  2. Slowly move the right hand toward the left hand.
  3. Allow your weight to shift naturally onto the left foot.
  4. If necessary, allow the right foot to rotate slightly inward.

Key Point

The fingertips lead the entire body.

Rather than moving the body first, let the intention at the fingertips guide the movement of the whole body.

Step 3: Fold the Left Hip

  1. Lower the fingertips of the right hand toward the left hip joint.
  2. As the fingertips descend, allow the left hip to fold naturally.
  3. Allow the pelvis to sink downward.
  4. Do not let the left knee collapse inward.

Important

As the pelvis moves, keep the knees open rather than letting them collapse inward.

The movement comes from folding at the hip joint while maintaining the open position of the knees.

It may even help to imagine both knees opening slightly farther outward.

Step 4: The Lowest Point

The lowest point is reached when the fingertips of the right hand reach the left hip joins in a gentle pointing motion.

At this point:

• Your weight rests on the left leg.
• The left hip is folded as much as comfortably possible.
• The upper body remains upright.
• The hips do not move backward.
• The knees remain open.

Ideally, the thighs should approach a position parallel to the ground.

However, descend only as far as your current condition allows.

Step 5: Rotate to the Right

  1. Allow the back of the right hand to travel across the front of the body toward the right side, led by the fingertips.
  2. Let the back of the hand and then the wrist make contact with the right hip joint.
  3. As the hand moves, allow the upper body to rotate to the right.

Important

The fingertips lead the rotation.

Step 6: Rise

  1. Turn the right hand over.
  2. Let the palm brush past the hip.
  3. Slide the hand upward along the thigh.
  4. As the hand rises, allow the right hip to gradually unfold.
  5. Allow the body to rise naturally.

At this point:

Your weight has fully shifted onto the right foot.

Turn your face toward the right.

Both arms open once again as if holding a large ball.

Step 7: Final Position on the Right

  1. Your weight rests on the right leg.
  2. The upper body stays upright.
  3. The knees remain open.

Step 8: Repeat on the Opposite Side

The movement now begins with the left hand.

  1. Move the left hand toward the right hand.
  2. Allow your weight to settle naturally onto the right foot.
  3. Gradually straighten the left leg.
  4. If necessary, allow the left foot to rotate slightly inward.
  5. Lower the fingertips of the left hand toward the right hip joint.
  6. Fold the right hip.
  7. Reverse the movement: rotate to the left and rise, allowing your weight to shift onto the left foot.

Repeat 6 times.
