1. 어쩌면 그 한마디 때문에 후배와 살게 된 건지도 몰랐다. 후배는 아름다운 목소리로 말했다. 그날 이후로 사라진 어머니를 생각하거나, 깊이 사랑했던 사람들과 헤어져야 했을 때는 말이에요. 껌 반쪽을 강요당한 그녀가 힘없이 대꾸했다. 응. 떠나고 떠나가며 가슴이 뻐근하게 메었던, 참혹한 시간들을 떠올려볼 때면 말이에요. 응. 후배가 한없이 투명한 표정으로 말했다. “지금도 입에 침이 고여요.” (p. 61)

소감: 작가는 그녀의 중간중간 추임새 “응”을 통해 독자의 호흡을 후배의 이야기에 귀기울이는 그녀의 시간과 포개 놓으며 호기심과 긴장감을 고조시킨다. 앞선 대화를 따옴표 없이 제시하다가 마지막에 “지금도 입에 침이 고여요”에만 따옴표를 사용함으로써 제목 「침이 고인다」를 선명하게 환기시킨다. 맛있는 음식에 대한 반사작용으로서의 군침이 아닌, 이별의 “참혹한 시간들”을 떠올릴 때의 신체 반응이라는 낯선 설정은 독자에게 즉각적인 감각적 공감을 불러일으키며 서늘한 여운을 남긴다. 이런 이야기를 들려주는 후배의 “아름다운 목소리”와 “한없이 투명한 표정” 역시 내면의 깊은 상실감과 기묘한 대비를 이룬다. 하지만 그 불일치는 설명하기 어려운 슬픔을 부각시키고, 독자의 입에도 침이 고이게 하는 이전의 이야기 전개를 통해 온전한 공감을 이끌어낸다.

Perhaps it was because of those words that she had ended up living with the younger woman. The younger woman spoke in her beautiful voice. Ever since that day, whenever I think of my mother, who disappeared, or whenever I have to say goodbye to someone I have deeply loved…Having been pressed into accepting half a stick of gum, she replied faintly. Mm-hmm. You know, whenever I think back on those terrible times—leaving, then leaving again, with my chest aching and tightening…Mm-hmm. The younger woman, her expression infinitely clear, said, “Even now, my mouth fills with saliva.”

Reflections: Through the woman’s occasional interjection—“Mm-hmm”—the author draws the reader into the rhythm of her attentive listening, gradually heightening curiosity and tension. The preceding dialogue flows without quotation marks, but the final line—“Even now, my mouth fills with saliva”—is set within them, sharply evoking the title, “Mouthwatering.”

Here, the saliva is not a reflexive response to delicious food but a bodily reaction to memories of the “terrible times” of separation. Though strange and unsettling, this image creates an immediate physical connection with the reader and leaves a lingering chill.

The younger woman’s “beautiful voice” and “infinitely clear expression” also form a striking contrast with the profound sense of loss she carries within. Yet this very dissonance brings her inexpressible grief into sharper focus. By the time we reach the final line, the preceding narrative has almost made saliva gather in the reader’s own mouth, transforming an unfamiliar bodily reaction into something we can fully understand and feel.
